Gerardo “Toto” Rotblat, drummer for the Grammy-winning Argentine rock band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, died March 29 in Buenos Aires from pulmonary edema the day after a gig with his band Dancing Moods. He was 38.

Born in Buenos Aires, Rotblat studied guitar, piano and drums before joining the Fabulosos Cadillacs in 1991. He recorded eight albums with the group over 11 years, including “El leon,” “Vasos vacios” and “La marcha del golazo solitario.” The band gained attention for its mixing of sounds from rock and ska to jazz and salsa, with its “Fabulosos Calavera” winning the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. The Cadillacs also won the MTV Latino Video Music Award in 1994 for the single “El Matador,” which was included in the soundtrack of films like Richard Shepard’s “The Matador” and George Armitage’s “Grosse Pointe Blank.”

Over his career, Rotblat played with hit bands like Los Autenticos Decadentes, Todos Tus Muertos and Man Ray, and most recently with Dancing Mood and Me Daras Mil Hijos. He was at the forefront as lead vocalist and songwriter of Orquesta Jabali, a band playing a mix of jazz, salsa, folk and big band.

He is survived by a son.
